These chess men are scroll
sawed using White Popular and the black pieces were
made from Walnut. The scroll saw pattern was taken
from a Patrick Spielman book The Art of The
Scroll Saw (ISBN 0-8069-0854-8)
The Kings
are about 4 inches tall and the pawns are about 2 1/4
inches in height.
The 96 Chess
men and the 3 chess boards in this picture were made
for the Francis Parker School in San Diego, Ca. auction
fund raiser. If you look close within the picture,
you can see that the chess men have one side not cut
out as in the set above. The 3 third grade classes
are going to paint the men, then place the front and
back of their heads on the chess men
This is a closer look of one of the
boards of the Francis Parker School fund raiser chess
sets. This picture shows a better look of the
flat place the children will place pictures of their
faces. After the school takes a picture of the
3 sets, I will upload the finished photos of the children's
handiwork. The cases are made from Walnut which
open and have dividers to store the chess men.
The chess squares are made from Figured Maple for the
white squares of each board while the black squares
are three different woods for each case. This
one is Canary Wood, another set is Bocote and the third
set is Spanish Cedar.
The case is
made of solid Walnut with the top veneered with Carpathian
Elm. The Black squares are Walnut and the White
Squares are Maple. The drawer can be made to
pull from the sides of the players or towards the players.
This case opens to the left and right of the players.
The plans for the chess case came from the December
2000 Woodsmith Magazine No 132. And yes,
I know I have the chess men rotated 90 degrees.
I have only played for 40 years - you think I would
know -huh? Shown with standard chess men.
The inlay molding
is Maple and Walnut. The board squares are 1 7/8
inch and have a 1/8 inch bevel all around the squares
giving a raised field effect.
These chess men were turned
on a lathe. The Knights were carved after turning
as well as the slit in the Bishop's head. The King
is about 3 1/2 inches in height. These Chess
men are standard Stanton chess figures.
The drawer
of the case has Maple dividers in it that allow the
pieces to be stored without rubbing against each other.
The bottom has soft white felt liner. There is also
room for Checkers inside the drawer.
This chess board folds in half making
a self storage for the chess men. The boards squares
are Maple and Mahogany. The base is Cherry.
